I have a good friend that I know is going through a rough patch, but they won’t open up to me about it. We all know that just because someone looks like they’re doing ok it doesn’t mean they are. How can I check up on them without being too overbearing or pushy? — Soma

What We're Sippin': Cozy, mulled red wine.

  • Think a favorite Cabernet Sauvignon with honey, brandy, cinnamon and other feel-good ingredients. It's a hug in a cup.

Where We're Sippin': On the couch, surrounded by our most favorite snacks.

You just need to be there for them.

Call them. But like, actually, pick up the fucking phone and dial the number and wait until you hear their voice or leave them a voicemail. That’s really all you can do. Just let them know that you’re there for them in any capacity. When they’re ready, they will open up.

I agree, though at some point Mother Teresa recommended sending an email and I rolled my eyes. Unless this person is a coworker, a text will do just fine. You can never force anyone to share information they’re not ready to share. That doesn’t mean they don’t need support and that doesn’t mean they don’t need it from you. All you can do is be available whenever that time does come.Positive memes or uplifting song suggestions also work wonders.

What’s a meme?
